As the number of Americans experiencing hunger continues to increase, the government and nonprofit organizations are seeking new ways to fight hunger. Some organizations seek monetary donations, while others seek volunteers and food. Various organizations provide information on how to get involved, including Feeding America and No Kid Hungry. Some organizations organize virtual food drives to spread awareness and help local food pantries. Those in need of non-perishable foods can donate canned goods to local food banks.
Approximately forty million Americans are food insecure, with 11 million of those people being children. Children who lack access to adequate food are at risk of experiencing health problems later in life. Close the national meal gap would require $20 billion a year, which is more than the cost of one hamburger. While the long-term economic payoff of addressing food insecurity may not be immediately evident, the immediate impact is as visible as a child’s smile after eating his/her first meal.
There are many nonprofit organizations fighting hunger, including the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Bread For The World, for example, helps people facing hunger in 45 countries. The organization spends $0.93 of every dollar raised on its programs. The organization also publishes an annual Hunger Report to educate and inspire advocates to act. Feed My Starving Children, on the other hand, works with food-distribution partners in communities to ensure that children are receiving nutritious food.
